New York Jets Draft Focus: Tight End Position

There is a lot of debate if the New York Jets should try to draft Eric Ebron from North Carolina... Or wait to round 2 and try to grab either Jace Amaro or Austin Seferian-Jenkins... Well I do agree we need to draft a Tight End not necessarily do we need to look in the first two rounds to find one to pair up with Jeff Cumberland our current resident split end along with second year man Zack Sudfeld...

For me, I believe the best situation is in the mid of day 2 whereas there are plenty of desired talent to which we could land a couple of prospects for this position...

Starting with C.J. Fiedorowicz from Iowa, this kid is known as a good blocker, actually his all around game is terrific... Good versatility, showing the ability to come off a down block to get past defenders as a receiver... Good body control and soft hands for such a large man...

For a team that gave a team friendly contract to their own player Jeff  Cumberland this would be the perfect prospect to bring in... Can play either the #1 or #2 role in Marty M's offense and after the first year in Cumberland's contract their is no dead loss if the team chooses to move on from J.C., which means draft someone that can compete and succeed J.C. after this upcoming season...

This brings me to my point of drafting two tight ends this draft... If we are drafting Cumberland's successor then we will need someone to fill the #2 role after this year... Coincidentally this year offers a surplus of #2 style blocking ends, and the next man up or actually the best blocking end in the draft is valued as a mid 4th round prospect Arthur Lynch from Georgia... The Jets are known to keep four tight ends on the active roster, so why not draft to eligible prospects who fill the need of the team long term not just short term...

Lynch's strength and awareness as an in-line blocker rank among his most impressive attributes at this point in his career... He is quick off the snap, latches onto defenders quickly and securely and is competitive... He is particularly effective on combination blocks in which he initially helps an offensive tackle double-team a defensive lineman before switching off to chip a linebacker at the second level... Lynch shows reliable hands and has a big frame to shield defenders from the ball...

In no way am I stating that Arthur Lynch is one dimensional, actually the opposite he is known as a very good red zone threat and had his chance down the seam where he displayed good hands... He may not have the attempts throw to him, could one blame him for not getting the chances to prove himself, btw he did have Aaron Murray an undersized QB throwing the ball, so maybe he just couldn't find Lynch over the middle... No excuses, just saying...

At the end of the day the Jets should be looking into acquiring a couple of prospects to fill the lack of talent at this position... Cumberland shows promise but he has been with the team for a few seasons now and really hasn't distinguished himself enough to show he could be that guy... How long should we keep waiting on him to step up and assume that role???
